Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of diseases which damages the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure inside the eye. The optic nerve carries the visual signal from the eye to the brain. When the optic nerve is damaged, peripheral vision is lost. In advanced cases, central vision is affected as well. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States. However, people with glaucoma do not notice any problems until significant damage and vision loss has occurred, and the vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. This is one reason why annual eye exams are so important.

The good news is early detection and treatment, along with close follow-up exams, can slow down or stop progression of glaucoma, and we check for glaucoma at every single eye exam. If you have not had a comprehensive eye exam in over a year, call us today to schedule your appointment.
